Agenda

I.  Discussion of new topics of interest

      A.  Summation of presentation by Dennis Cheek of the Kauffman Foundation at April 21 conference

      • The panel discussion was very informative and participants were encouraged to focus on: relationship building, networking and funding. Toni stated that she believes Dennis knows that Michigan is serious about doing business differently than in the past by 1) working collaboratively 2) not waiting for the manufacturing slump to be over and then returning to the way we used to do business, but looking for other options 3) networking with in-state foundations and 4) to be open to looking at Best Practices, i.e. bringing in CASE. As a result, the Kauffman Foundation would be a good source of brainstorming. LCC, on the other hand needs to do a better job through the Banner system to capture student tracking data in order to substantiate success. The Small Business and Technology Development Center (SBTDC) is doing an excellent job at capturing data and utilizing the data to make decisions. Toni has requested that the LCC Banner Team make sure that there are attributes assigned to student data to allow tracking such as how many students are receiving articulated credit in specific programs of study; how many of those students are moving on to an associates degree or certificate of completion or how many of those students are transferring to a four-year institutions. We are currently marketing to 250, 16-18 year olds that have received articulated credit in a marketing or business course or have taken a high school course in one of these two areas. We are encouraging those students to enroll in LCC business courses, to take a course that is part of the Entrepreneurial Studies Certificate of Completion program and receive training through the SBTDC. We would like to also connect those students through the entrepreneurship initiative with the Generation “E” Institute and the LCC Business department. Currently, Kelly Williams of DeWitt HS teaches the only entrepreneurship course in our tax district. All of our other partners teach marketing or introduction to business courses. Due to the information shared in the breakout sessions with Dennis, Toni is entertaining the idea of marketing to students interested in science and technology, collaboration, team-building, knowledge transfer, etc instead of entrepreneurship for our summer youth camp. Toni suggested we partner with Bobby Bringi, President and CEO, MBI Intl., Mike Poterala, Executive Director of MSU Technologies, Michigan State University and Jim Lynch, Manager, Spartan Ventures, Michigan State University Foundation to tap into high school students.

       B.  Lisa Katz: Web Tool - An option for hosting Promising Practices information

      • There is a possibility that the workgroup’s website information at www.midmichiganlearningcommunities.pbwiki.com can be moved to the “We Too” website. “We Too” all about your business® assists resource providers and businesses to locate information and tracks their progress throughout the website. Toni suggested that “We Too” template be used as a platform for the workgroup.

II.  Consensus on Topics/Projects of interest to group for further work

       A.  Workgroup should continue to meet to discuss its focus of:

      • Promising Practices-State of Michigan.

      • Pushing Promising (Best) Practices to the extent of partnering with other sectors to ensure they presented on a consistent basis.

      • Pursuit of starting a 501c (3) should not be pursued at this time. Instead, we should work with Generation “E” Institute.

      • Toni needs to know when the WIRED Steering Committee will make a decision regarding sustainability.

      • Lisa suggested that the Steering Committee should meet with Toni to discuss support systems and champion of special causes to better understand Toni’s needs regarding WIRED funding and non-WIRED funding.

      • Lisa inquired who else needs to be involved with workgroup. A suggestion was made to do a search of interested parties who may want to participate such as: Karen Pojha, Dept. of Career and technical Education.

III.  Next Steps

    • Toni will contact Karen Pojha, David Dieterly, Maredee Vaughan and Barb Fails and inquire who is working with K-12 entrepreneurship on a state and national level and if they interested in working with this workgroup.

    • Workgroup will tap into 2+2+2 program to get their input.

    • A workgroup member needs to be identified to take the lead in pursuing funding.
