MEETING DISCUSSIONS:
Healthcare Learning Champion Norma Hagenow lead discussion in reviewing information from previous meetings about the Model MMIT Healthcare Learning Community Strategies shown above in the wheel.
Previous meeting discussions have included the following questions and answers:
What are examples of successes in the region? Educational facilities Regional access to policymakers Success stories (our promising practices) Greater Flint Health Coalition and FHEO accelerated program Clinical Some of the top hospitals in country Town Hall meetings Regional Tech Centers Shared history of resilience CNA curriculum revision Competitors are beginning to collaborate (RHIO in Diversity summit at MSU
What are the challenges to our goal(s) in Mid-Michigan?
Overlap of efforts – need a map to prevent duplication Lack of connection with other resources – need to showcase and leverage resources Uninformed, inconsistent communication/message Limited diversity of industry Aging workforce (40-55 year olds in difficult transition) Brain drain of younger, skilled workforce Attitude that education is unnecessary – i.e., complacency (i.e. lack of “entrepreneurial spirit”) “Change is Bad” High drop-out rate Too much competition The real cost of doing business/costs of healthcare and lack of collaboration around costs Lack of economic education for healthcare workers (understanding that quality leads to reduced costs) Sustainable funding (esp. for healthcare faculty) Time and ROI for involvement Technological infrastructure High unemployment rate/job loss
What assets do we have that could help us address these challenges?
Educational institutions/excellence Legislative champions Center for Nursing Focus on cultural competency Streamlining health programs at schools Success stories to highlight, foster, leverage and replicate Relationships throughout region and industry Motivation: well-informed, good communicators as advocates Access to media, press and legislators
